Appa Crochet Project
This weeks post will feature a crochet project on how to crochet Appa. Appa is a flying bison from the animated series (recently turned into live action tv show) Avatar the Last Airbender. This is a project I have started but havent had a chance to finish. Below I have linked the video I was following and I have included a list of all the supplies you will need. I have written out the instructions below and you can also use the video to help you learn the different types of stitches if you are new to crocheted or if you want to follow along with the video.
What you’ll need:
- 3 Colors of Yarn: Brown, White, and Light Brown
- Plastic Eyes
- A Crochet Hook (Size G: 4.25 MM)
- Yarn Needle
- White Polyester Fiber Fill (Pillow Fill Stuffing)
- Scissors
Piece 1: Appa’s Head
Chain 4 and Join with a Slip Stitch
- 6 Single Crochets in the Circle (or Lil Bird’s Nest)
- 2 Single Crochets in each Stitch around
- 1 Single Crochet (SC) in 1st Stitch, 2 SC in 2nd. Repeat around until you have 18 Stitches
- 1 SC in 1st + 2nd Stitches, 2 SC in 3rd. Repeat around until you have 24 Stitches.
- 1 SC in 1st + 2nd + 3rd, 2 SC in 4th. Repeat around until you have 30 Stitches.
- 1 SC in 1st + 2nd + 3rd + 4th, 2 SC in 5th Stitch. Repeat until you have 36 Stitches.
- 1 SC in 1st + 2nd + 3rd + 4th + 5th, 2 SC in 6th Stitch. Repeat until you have 42 Stitches.
- 1 SC in each stitch around (42 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (42 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (42 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (42 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (42 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (42 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (42 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (42 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (42 Stitches in each round
- Place Eyes in Between Rows 13 and 14 with 6 Stitches separating them.
- 5 SC, 1 Decrease Single Crochet (DSC). Repeat until you have 36 Stitches.
- 4 SC, 1 DSC. Repeat until you have 30 Stitches.
- 3 SC, 1 DSC. Repeat until you have 24 Stitches.
- 2 SC, 1 DSC. Repeat until you have 18 Stitches.
- 1 SC, 1 DSC. Repeat until you have 12 Stitches.
- Add Stuffing in to stuff the head
- 6 DSC around, closing the head
Piece 2: Appa’s Hat
Chain 4 and join with a Slip Stitch
- 6 Single Crochets in the Circle (or Lil Bird’s Nest)
- 2 Single Crochets in each Stitch around
- 1 Single Crochet (SC) in 1st Stitch, 2 SC in 2nd. Repeat around until you have 18 Stitches
- 1 SC in 1st + 2nd Stitches, 2 SC in 3rd. Repeat around until you have 24 Stitches.
- 1 SC in 1st + 2nd + 3rd, 2 SC in 4th. Repeat around until you have 30 Stitches.
- 1 SC in 1st + 2nd + 3rd + 4th, 2 SC in 5th Stitch. Repeat until you have 36 Stitches.
- 1 SC in 1st + 2nd + 3rd + 4th + 5th, 2 SC in 6th Stitch. Repeat until you have 42 Stitches.
- 1 SC in each stitch around (42 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (42 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (42 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (42 Stitches in each round)
- The Scallops: 3 Double Crochets (DC) in the 1st Stitch, 3 DC in the 2nd Stitch, Slip Stitch into the 3rd Stitch.
Piece 3: Appa’s Body
Chain 4 and join with a Slip Stitch
- 6 Single Crochets in the Circle (or Lil Bird’s Nest)
- 2 Single Crochets in each Stitch around
- 1 Single Crochet (SC) in 1st Stitch, 2 SC in 2nd. Repeat around until you have 18 Stitches
- 1 SC in 1st + 2nd Stitches, 2 SC in 3rd. Repeat around until you have 24 Stitches.
- 1 SC in 1st + 2nd + 3rd, 2 SC in 4th. Repeat around until you have 30 Stitches.
- 1 SC in 1st + 2nd + 3rd + 4th, 2 SC in 5th Stitch. Repeat until you have 36 Stitches.
- 1 SC in each stitch around (36 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (36 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (36 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (36 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (36 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (36 Stitches in each round)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (36 Stitches in each round)

- 1 SC in each stitch around (36 Stitches in each round)
- 4 SC, 1 DSC. Repeat until you have 30 Stitches.
Piece 4: Appa’s Ears
Chain 2
- 9 Double Crochets (DC) into the 2nd Chain from the Hook (The first chan you did)
- 5 SC into the 1st DC you did (Remember the Double Crochet (DC) is the stitch we used for the scallops in Appa’s Hat)
Make x2 of these
Piece 5: Appa’s Legs
Chain 4 and join with a Slip Stitch (or a SC)
- 6 SC in the circle (or Lil Bird’s Nest)
- 2 SC in each Stitch around
- Slip Stitch into the next stitch
Switch to your White Yarn!
Do a Slip stitch to hold the white yarn in
- Stitch in every Stitch around (12 Stitched in each row)
- Stitch in every Stitch around (12 Stitched in each row)
- Stitch in every Stitch around (12 Stitched in each row)
- Stitch in every Stitch around (12 Stitched in each row)
- Stitch in every Stitch around (12 Stitched in each row)
Stuff and then pinch sides together and stitch closed
Do this x6 times for all 6 legs
Piece 6: Appa’s Face
Chain 2
- 6 SC into 2nd chain from hook
- 2 SC in each stitch around
Chain 6 and attach to one cheek with a slip stitch
- SC in each stitch across, and slip stitch to second cheek
(Make sure the cheeks are both facing the same way!)
2. DC in each stitch across (6 Stitches) Slip Stitch into other side to finish.
Whip Stitch around one side to create Appa’s nose! (In Dark Brown Yarn)
Piece 7: Appa’s Tummy
Chain 13
- Turn and Stitch 1 SC in each chain across, skipping the first chain.
- Turn and SC in each Stitch across
- Turn and SC in each Stitch across
- Turn and SC in each Stitch across
- Turn and SC in each Stitch across
- Turn and SC in each Stitch across
- Turn and SC in each Stitch across
- Turn and SC in each Stitch across
- Turn and SC in each Stitch across
- Turn and SC in each Stitch across
- Turn and SC in each Stitch across
- Turn and SC in each Stitch across
- Turn and SC in each Stitch across

Second Part: Insert your hook into the 4th stitch from the right side.
- 6 SC into the next 6 Stitches
- Turn and SC in each stitchacross (6 Stitches)
- Turn and SC in each stitch across (6 Stitches)
- Turn and SC in each stitch across (6 Stitches)
Stitch around the edge to give it a finished + clean look!
Piece 8: Appa’s Stripes
For Stripes 1, 2, + 3:
Chain 15
- Stitch in 2nd Chain from hook, and SC across (13 Stitches)
Make x3 of these and then Make x1 that is only 9 Stitches
Piece 9: Appa’s Horns
Chain 4 and join with a Slip Stitch
- 4 SC
- 1 SC in 1st Stitch, 2 SC in 2nd. X2 (6 Stitches)
- 1 SC in 1st + 2nd Stitches, 2 SC in 3rd. X2 (8 Stitches)
- 1 SC in 1st, 2nd + 3rd Stitches, 2 SC in 4th Stitch, x2 (10 Stitches)
- 1 SC in each Stitch around, (10 Stitches)
Make x2 of these horns
Piece 10: Appa’s Tail
Chain 4 and join with a slip stitch
- 10 SC in ring
- 2 SC in each stitch (20 Stitches)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (20 Stitches)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (20 Stitches)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (20 Stitches)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (20 Stitches)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (20 Stitches)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (20 Stitches)
- 1 SC in each stitch around (20 Stitches)
Piece 11: Appa’s Arrow
Chain 3, turn and Stitch 2 SC (Starting in 2nd chain from hook)
Chain 1 and turn
- 2 SC in each stitch across (4 Stitches)
- 1 SC in 1st stitch, 2 SC in 2nd Stitch. X2
- 1 SC in 1st + 2nd Stitches, 2 SC in 3rd Stitch. X2 (8 Stitches)
- 1 SC in 1st, 2nd + 3rd Stitches, 2 SC in 4th Stitch. X2 (10 Stitches)
Turn and slip stitch into 4 stitches
- 2 SC (centered to top of the arrow head)
- Turn and stitch 2 SC
- Turn and stitch 2 SC
- Turn and stitch 2 SC
- Turn and stitch 2 SC
- Turn and stitch 2 SC
- Turn and stitch 2 SC

Stitch all the way around to give it a clean edge!
Assemble and sew pieces together (use video)
Tip: Pining the pieces helps a lot
Afterwards you finish assembling all the pieces together you should have your finished Appa!
This is adorable! My daughter is a big Avatar fan. I gave up crochet when I had to do something more than a single chain stitch, so I'm super impressed with this work.
